The first recorded death on the Island happen in 1857 when two men died in an excavation accident. According to Native American folklore Alcatraz Island is an "energy portal" that allows evil spirits to come and go. Guards and prisoners alike have describe all types of haunting at the island which include shadow figures, screams, sobbing, and putrid smells.

The most famous spirit on Alcatraz Island is a ghostly figure with glowing eyes. The figure seems to be from the 1800s according to this one report a guard gave in the 1940s. The figure with the glowing eyes haunts Cell Block D also known as solitary confinement. Prisoners would be strip of everything, yes even clothing, and place in their small dingy cells. The only thing found in the cell is a sink, toilet, and small light. At night a mattress would be place in the cell, but would be remove at once in the morning. Several prisoners have reported being attack by the figure with the glowing eyes. The guards though pay no heed believing the stories to be hallucinations.

One poor soul wasn't so lucky to have just had a hallucination. This man was place in cell 14D and during the whole night scream his voice away. He claimed he was being attack by the figure with the glowing eyes. He screamed and screamed till suddenly he just stopped. In the morning when the guards open his cell he was dead. The man had a horrible expression glued to his face and had hand prints on his neck. On closer examination is was found that the marks had not been self inflicted. A few days after this event during a head count the guards realize there was to many men in the line. After recounting the guards realize that at the end of the line was the man who have been strangled in 14D. When the guards finally notice the man he vanished before their eyes. No one is sure how the man died some claim an angry guard sick of the screaming kill him, but no one was ever charged with his murder. Cell 14D is consider one of the most haunted places in the prison it is claimed to be much colder then any of the surrounding areas.
